The Ultimate DIY Guide: Inviting Colors To Paint Your Home With

You don’t always to spend lots of money to enhance the beauty of your home. Sometimes all you need is a fresh coat of paint to bring your home to life.

In that regard, there is a myriad of colors to choose from, colors that will accentuate whatever look or scheme you want for your home. You only have to make the right paint color selection, paint it right and enjoy the fresh new look.

1. What You Should Know Before Choosing a Paint Color For Your Home

Painting a home can be quite a challenge. It doesn’t matter whether it is redecorating, painting for sale or just a new house as all of these need one to be very careful. All the same, most people might not be entirely aware of the significant impact that color has on their mood. You, therefore, shouldn’t just pick a brush and roller before figuring out what paint color will work for your home.

Here are a few general guidelines that would be an excellent starting point in your search for perfect colors to set the proper inviting mood inside of your home.

Type of Paint

There are various types of paint. If you visit any paint store, you will find a variety of paint colors, sheens and brands to choose from. All you have to do is be smart and know exactly what you want before choosing a particular type of paint.

Paint comes in oil and latex options. Users most prefer latex paints because these are easy to clean, they are more durable, and they are fade resistant. Also, latex paints tend to breathe better compared to oil based paints, and they happen to leave less blistering on paint jobs. So if you want a clean paint job especially for the walls, then latex paint can be a good option.

You should also know that paint comes in a variety of sheens regardless of the color. The three most common paint sheens are glossy sheen, semi-gloss and matte paints. These sheens just like the names suggest will give a glossy/shiny, less shiny or flat finish. Depending on how you want your paint color to appear, choose the right sheen for your home. Here is something to help;

A glossy sheen is easy to clean; it is best preferred if you have kids since they tend to dirty the walls with finger prints and other stuff. Semi-gloss finishes, on the other hand, are less shiny, less expensive and can work well for kitchens and bathrooms that require cleanliness.

Matte finishes unlike the other two are quite flat in appearance. These work well if you have walls with some form of imperfections as they tend to hide them very well. The downside with matte paints, however, is that they get dirty and show pretty quickly and easily. Cleaning matte walls is also not that easy.

Mood of The Room

We’ve said before that paint colors for the home reflect a particular mood. In this regard, you need to consider the specific mood of a room before making a particular selection. For example, a bedroom reflects intimacy and relaxation. Therefore for this, you will need to choose more relaxing and soft colors and not the stronger ones like red that insinuate drama. Some useful information about the color selection can be found here:

2. Color Selection

The best way to select colors for your house is by using the color wheel as a guideline. A color wheel is just a guideline in chart form illustrating the relationship between colors, i.e. primary colors and how they create secondary colors when combined. With a clear understanding of these, you can easily choose colors the right way and know how to work with different shades to achieve the ultimate look you want for your house.

Choose colors that offer continuity throughout the house and make you happy at the same time. Know that it is possible to have the best of both worlds! Just don’t think about the possibility of a resale and paint your home with whatever colors that make you happy. Why shouldn't you enjoy your home and add "special touches" to it to be unique and make you feel good?

If you choose an eccentric color because you like it, great! But keep in mind that continuity is essential. While looking at the color wheel, there are several things to consider when understanding color continuity:

Most colors do well with hues in the same family (different shades of blue, for example) or the colors next to them (orange and violet are both on either side of red).

Colors look good with their opposites. While looking at the opposite sides of the color wheel, you can see that red and green are opposites. This concept is called the "complementary." Warm colors always have cool complementary, and vice versa.

If you choose to paint a wall two different colors above and below a chair rail, you may want to consider complementary colors or different shades of the same family.

A question most people ask is, "should I choose my paint colors first or pick my colors from my room decor that I already have?" My answer is: choose whichever of the two means that more to you. For instance, if you have a quilt that your grandmother made you and you want to showcase it, pick a color to match the quilt and accentuate it. Conversely, if lilac makes you happy and you want to paint a bedroom with it, choose it first then pick out decor.

At the end of the day, the color you choose to paint your home should be a true reflection of who you are and what you want to portray.

3. Choosing Warm Colors

Warm colors are quite friendly and very inviting. They work like magic and make a good design option to change the look of your home. Although warm colors are often associated with feminine characteristics, colors like yellow and bright shades of orange tend to lighten the mood and make an ideal choice for family rooms.

You can get some tips from here:

Red as a warm color can bring lots of elegance to a room. However, red also creates a dramatic impression and arouses feelings of anger and hostility. If you prefer painting red in your interiors then choose shades of red carefully and use them along with more lively colors to compensate.

Yellow, on the other hand, brings happiness and joy. Yellow also brings optimism and sunlight to a room and therefore colors in the yellow family make a good accent color for most rooms.

A combination of red and yellow give the orange color which often seems to be attention grabbing. It creates a feeling of balance, raises energy levels and creates lots of excitement. Orange may not be the most favorite color for most people, but when softer shades of orange are used the end results are usually very inviting.

A muted shade of orange painted in the living room creates an appealing atmosphere and a welcoming feeling.

4. Choosing Cool Colors

The most common cool colors used by designers for homes are green, blue and purple.

Green as a paint color helps to bring the outdoors in and can be painted in any room of the house. Bold or vibrant shades of green are known to be very peaceful and welcoming. They promote comfort and togetherness especially greens like seafoam.

For a more relaxing and refreshing look and feel, blues can work greet too, and that is probably why it mostly used for bedrooms and bathrooms. Mixed with green, blue can create the perfect inviting atmosphere that makes many guests feel welcome. Blue for the dining room is known to decrease appetite and therefore might be a good choice if you are trying to shade some pounds.

Lighter shades of blue work well for rooms that get limited natural light. It works even better when accentuated with warmer hues for the furnishing and fabrics. If you are painting darker rooms, consider warm shades of blue like turquoise and avoid dark blue as this evokes sadness and bitter emotions

Purple is a rich and dramatic color that is useful when you want to create a mood of luxury. It oozes sophistication and creativity when used in homes. This paint color is also useful when used as an accent as it creates a very appealing color scheme. Additionally, Lighter versions of purple like lavender tend to bring relaxing qualities to a home but without the chilliness of blue.

In decorating your home, remember that most warm colors are welcoming, while cool colors offer a feeling of comfort. There is nothing wrong with mixing shades from the warm and cool spectrum as long as they coordinate well. Unless you are a very bold person who loves the extreme, avoid using large amounts of bold red, purple or black in decorating your home. Strong colors like these will begin to wear on your nerves over time, as they can be distracting. Use color to decorate your home not only with magnificenthues but with a comforting or welcoming atmosphere as well!

5. Choosing Neutral Colors

If the above warm and cool colors do not appeal to you, then consider a neutral pallet for your painting project. If you are unfamiliar, natural tones include blacks, grays, whites, and browns. A proper mix of neutral colors will give your home that inviting look that you are so interested in creating.

Neutral walls give you more freedom when it is choosing and changing the overall look of your home or room. For example, if you go with gray walls, you can add in black furniture a few black fabrics and red accent pieces on the tables and light fixtures.

Additionally, neutral colors tend to create an inviting feel to a home without appearing too dark or too daring. If you are considering a neutral pallet, a combination of a few neutrals works well together. For example, you can paint 3 out of 4 walls white and paint one a dark gray. This will help you create an accent wall without having to spend hours comparing shades and trying to find ones that match one another as well as your furniture.

A wise choice when redecorating a house that could be resold is by going for neutrals. With neutral walls, you will lower your expenses of having to paint down bold colors and also allow the house sell faster.

6. DIY Guide on How To Pull Out a Proper Paint Job

Truly, painting is one of the easiest, fastest and cheapest ways to add value to a home. Furthermore, a well-done painting job could also lift your mood and enhance your productivity with inviting colors. Here is a guide to help you carry out a successful home painting project.

Choose a Hue

The first thing before the project is to choose a shade/shades to paint. Often when you visit a paint store, the dealer will provide you with a color matching scheme to help you select your preferred colors. The variety of options that you will be presented with can be quite overwhelming, and you can easily get frustrated trying to choose the right hue.

But before you pick a color from any matching scheme, it would be resourceful to first decide upon the colors that suit your needs. When you have this figured out, you can then proceed to use the color matching scheme to decide upon the exact shade of the particular color you choose.

Ensure that the colors you choose are right for your home and will provide you with the needed fulfillment. For proper coordination, try matching up the various shades you choose with your furniture and other home accessories. If you are unsure, ask the store dealer to give you chips that correspond with your colors of choice for testing. Alternatively, you can get sample sizes of your chosen paints and test them on your walls. Check how they look in various lighting conditions and decide on which one works best.

Just remember that color effects change depending on the surface area it covers. If you're going to cover larger areas such as walls and ceilings, opt for lighter hues of your chosen colors so that it would not appear too dark unless that's the effect you're going for, then feel free to do otherwise.

Also, always go for colors to accentuate your color scheme in certain items of your house. But don't do this on too many colors because it would only create a dramatic feel/look in your home. Keep in mind that you want inviting and not overwhelming. Limit your color accents to a maximum of three colors. You can also opt to use a different shade of your primary color instead of using an entirely different color as your accent. The important thing is to strike a balance in your color scheme.

Since color can make different illusions for a room, you can take advantage of this especially of you have a tiny space to work with. Choose neutral and light colors to create an appearance of vastness as opposed to using darker colors. If you want to make your ceiling appear higher, you can paint them shades of white or off-white.

The key to any successful house painting is preparation. The preparation stage makes all the difference in the outcome of the painting project. It also makes cleaning a little easy to do. For the prep work, the first thing to do is clear the room being painted. Take out anything that might get ruined by paint like artwork pieces, clocks, furniture, etc. If there are larger pieces that can’t be moved easily then cover them well to avoid splashing paint on them.

Remember also to cover your floors with a newspaper or anything protective to keep it free from any splashes.

Evaluate The Condition of The Walls and Repair Flaws

The nest thing you must do is to assess the state of the walls and ceiling in your home. If there are nail holes, dents, or high spots you may want to repair them, this is a must! Don't expect the paint to fill any cracks or magically make defects in the wall disappear. A fresh coat of paint will only give the room a new clean feeling, but it won’t make imperfections on the walls and ceilings disappear.

Your walls and ceiling must be clean, and in perfect condition, before you start painting. You must fill all nail holes remove all dirt and stains if your ceiling has a water stain it must be treated with a product specially designed to prevent that stain from seeping through your ceiling paint. Painting over a water stain without proper preparation is a waste of your time. Properly treating that stain before painting the ceiling is imperative.

Use a small amount of spackle to fill in small dents and nail holes. Allow any repairs you make to thoroughly dry then lightly sand them and remove any dust with a damp cloth. I cannot stress enough how the time you spend preparing your walls all dust with a damp will benefit you tremendously.

Assemble And Organize Your Materials

For this project, you will only need the paint, a paint brush, a wet cloth, and container. Once you have these, pour your paint into a smaller and lighter container. Using a smaller container will give you an easy time moving from one spot to another when using a brush. It will also allow you to paint overheads like ceilings easily.

Have with you a wet cloth to help you clear any messes before they become serious. For example, you will need a wet cloth to wipe away paint that accidentally splashes on your floors or furniture pieces. Plus, a wet cloth is easier to use than having to gather cleaning material every time a small mess occurs.

Wear an Apron, Closed Shoes, and Gloves

An apron with pockets will come in handy when doing a painting job. This will help prevent any paint splashes on your clothes, hand or feet. Additionally, the pockets will help you with storage of extra brushes, phone, and the wet cloth. Plus how cute is it when the apron accumulates different shades of paint overtime. It will eventually become some sort library for all your painting work.

Use Good Quality Paint Brushes

A good quality paintbrush will give a good quality outcome. Investing in a poor quality brush may compromise the quality of your work and therefore also affect the final look of your colors. Some poor quality brushes subject you to picking bristles throughout the project leaving marks and blisters on your paint job. Always remember to ask the store dealer for the best brushes for the job.

Paint In The Same Direction

It recommended that you try and paint one wall at a time. Although you might spend more time doing this, in the end, you will get an excellent finish. Start by cutting in along the ceiling and the floor with a paintbrush. You can mask off anything that does not need paint with a good masking tape. This will ensure that even a person that does not have a steady hand will leave a straight line. Then begin rolling the wall. If a person follows this formula, they will not leave an overlap where the rolling met the paintbrush.

When using the roller, ensure that you load it correctly depending on the size of surface you want to paint. This will also depend on the type of sleeve that you have, but regardless the motion remains the same.

To begin painting, roll the roller don the pan until the sleeve comes into contact with the paint. Once this is done, let the roller sleeve get saturated completely before lifting it up toward the pan and then getting it back into the paint. Repeating this a few more times will get the needed amount of paint into the tray and also saturate your roller just as you need it.

The reason why you should let the roller sleeve to get overly saturated is so that you can achieve a consistent thickness of coating as well as get a full coverage paint on the wall. Just remember to keep only the sleeve in the paint and not the entire roller.

With paint on the roller and the tray loading it, it becomes super easy and less time consuming with the pan. You just have to dab the paint on the roller and lift up, repeat the process and there you are; ready to paint and keep on painting.

The best way to achieve a consistent finish and full coverage on your walls is by using long motions from top to bottom and in areas of about 2 to 4 feet wide. How far and wide you can paint will, however, be determined by the length of your walls as well as how much your sleeves can hold paint.

Once your roller sleeve is loaded with paint, start by applying just the right amount of pressure to get the paint soaked in the wall.

Just ensure that that you roll from the middle of the wall to the bottom repeating the process and rerolling through the spot where you started. You can continue rolling from the left or right side of your starting area. Just ensure that you don’t start too far off from either side you start with. At this point try to make everything as even as possible.

Since consistency is key, ensure that you re-spread the paint from your focal point and give it a more consistent thickness. For better results, after you is finished painting, finish your work by gently rolling again downwards over the entire painted area to give it a smooth and consistent finish.
