You must have materials. This is where you require essentials such as a

Measurements are usually critical when you are going to purchase these materials. This will allow you to save a lot by going for only what you do require. Apart from the materials you also need tools. Some of the tools that you might require are relatively expensive, that is why it recommended that you hire them rather than buying. The following are the tools that you do require for the whole task;

  • A Kreg Pocket Hole Jig
  • Straight Edge
  • A Table Saw or a Circular Saw that has a guide; it's meant to cut the plywood as it gives it a perfect surface finish
  • Router, Table Saw; it's meant to cut dados
  • Miter box, Power miter saw, and table saw; it’s meant to cut to length the plywood
  • Drill; to drill the holes
  • A Tape Measure; this one is meant for measurement purposes

The tools that are mentioned above are not very expensive for one to acquire hence there is no need to consider the hiring option. Furthermore, if you consider going for.

The Steps To Follow When Making A Drawer with Kreg Jig

Step 1: Have an Overview of the Drawer Box Construction

This is where you will visualize the various construction techniques that you will implement when making the drawer. The techniques that you visualize should go hand in hand with the tools that you have. You can't visualize yourself using the latest techniques, yet you do not have those tools that will help you do that. In our case, we will major on the Pocket hole joinery technique since they produce drawers that are strong, simple and very attractive. Our simple drawer is made up of 6 main components;

  • Drawer Box Sides (2)
  • The Exposed drawer front
  • The bottom of the drawer.
  • The back of the drawer.
  • The front of the drawer.

Step 2: Select the wood for the Drawer

There are various types of woods that you can go for and this include; melamine coated particle board, Veneered hardwood plywood, solid wood boards, MDF, etc. I usually recommend that when you are going for wood, then the Plywood should be your number one choice cause they are best when it comes to making of durable and more stable drawers. The size thickness of the plywood is also just beyond expectations one of the best sizes that you can go for. Going for the Solid wood boards is not a very good idea since they are usually deemed to be expensive.

Step 3 Determine The Drawer Box Width

This is one of the very critical measurements that you need to consider since it will always be determined by the outside width of your drawer box and the width of the opening of the drawer. The Drawers slides usually have very minimal tolerance hence when determining their sizes you can go for the opening width. This can be determined by taking the inside dimension of the drawer box opening measurement and subtract 2 times the clearance.

Step 4 Determine the Drawer Box Height Measurement

There is usually a constrained height for the opening where the drawer will be installed and the Non-Constrained Height. In case the height is constrained then it's very vital that you do measure the opening dimensions. This is normally done after the cabinet carcass is assembled and finished. In the case of an any slight discrepancy then the measurement of both sides are supposed to be taken. After that, you will then allow for a proper clearance basing on the specifications for the drawer slide.

Step 5 Determine the Drawer Box Depth dimensions

It's usually complicated to determine the Drawer depth dimension. A perfectly balanced drawer depth should be the same as the drawer glides that you have used. The following steps will guide you to determine a perfect drawer depth.

  • Measure the inside depth of your cabinet where you will be installing your drawer.
  • You will then measure from the back of your cabinet to the front of the cabinet.

Step 6 Determine the Length of the Drawer Box Sides Front and Back

Taking the overall outside width of your drawer and subtracting it from 2 times the thickness of the sides pieces allows you to determine the length of the front and back of your drawer.

Step 7 Determine the Layout and Cut the Drawer Box Sides, Backs, and Fronts

DIY is always meant to reduce the costs so do not waste a lot of plywood during cutting. Using the dimensions that you have generated, you will use a table saw to cut out the marked dimensions of your sides, backs, and fronts. The length of the piece is attractive when the cut follows the grains of the plywood. The Power miter saw is used to trim the plywood pieces to length. Also when it comes to accuracy, then the table saw is the number one tool that you can consider.

Step 8: Assemble the Drawer Box Sides

Once the drawer box sides are cut, and they are ready, you will assemble them one by one. This where you will have to use the Kreg Jig to bore in the pocket holes. You will drill the eight pocket holes on the sides. Once you have already drilled the pocket holes, you will screw the drawer boxes together. After that you will also install the drawer bottom. Using the router, you can ease the edges of the top of the drawer. You will also get rid of the sharp edges using a sand paper as you do the all round finishing. The coating will also help you protect the drawer.

In Conclusion

Making the drawer by yourself is one of the tremendous ways in which you can save a lot. Thus just make sure you are keen with the measurements to avoid wastes. The Kreg Jig is one of the necessary machines that you can consider to go for. It will play an impact role in ensuring that you do come up with a very strong and durable drawer.
